Position sensors
Position sensors are used to detect positions on objects of any material type and surface properties. The movement of objects is converted by position sensors into signals for processing, transmitting and controlling. Depending on the application conditions, various position sensors are used. Position sensors
Position sensors are for position location of objects made of very varied materials and surface texture. Position sensors translate the movement of objects into signals for tasks such as processing, transmission and controlling. The type of position sensor to use depends on the material and surface quality of the object to be registered, the operational range required and the environment of the application.
Types of position sensor
Inductive sensors are used to register metallic objects at short distances. Ultrasonic sensors, photoelectric sensors and capacitive sensors detect objects irrespective of the material and surface texture. The first two sensor types also feature large detection ranges. Capacitive sensors operate at short distances. Magnetic sensors can detect magnets through non-magnetic materials. Cylinder sensors serve to determine the piston position in pneumatic cylinders.
Advantages of position sensors
As they are available in many variations, position sensors can be used for a very wide range of applications. They are insensitive to dust, moisture and vibrations and have therefore proved their value in demanding industrial environments. Position sensors are characterized by large sensing ranges and excellent switch point accuracy as well as their contactless and wear-free mode of operation.
All the advantages of position sensors at a glance:
- Contactless and wear-free operation
- High switching frequencies
- High switch point accuracy
- Insensitive to dust, moisture and vibrations
- Mechanical compatibility: old switches can easily be replaced by sensors
- Very suitable for use in harsh industrial environments
- Register position reliably and exactly
- Broad range of applications
Application areas for position sensors
